The beauty of the Delta

A River Delta is a rare natural phenomenon, where the river flows to the ocean dividing in several small rivers, just like a drawing of a hand, forming dunes and warm waters lagoons. The Parnaíba River Delta is the third biggest ocean Delta of the whole world and is a really close tour to do when staying with us at Terra Patris!

A unique place to spend a different day during your stay. Each season we receive more and more guests that are willing to stay in Barra Grande instead of Parnaíba. But they all would like to enjoy the Delta tour. Many don't know that is completely possible to spend the day in the Delta and come back to spend the night in Barra Grande!

How is the Delta Tour

Delta rio parnaibaThe Delta Tour starts at the Tatu's port (Porto dos Tatus), in the Island of Ilha Grande de Santa Izabel, just outside Parnaíba. From there, the boats float through the mangrove, where you will be seeing birds, alligators, different species of crabs and an untouched vegetation. After the river tour, you will arrive in an almost deserted beach, formed only by a sand strip that separates the river from the ocean. In some tours is even possible to arrive in the Small Lençóis Maranhenses, in a place called Feijão Bravo, in the middle of the dunes.

If you want a complete tour, you should ask to see the bird's flock, a tour called Revoada dos Guarás, that can be done by the end of the day (near sunset). It's a long trip, but totally worth it!

For kitesurfers , that are special tours made with specialized guides to explore all the beauties of the Delta. You can make downwinds, ride on the ocean, on the river and even spend the night in a safari.

Some tours (in the big boats) also offer lunch in the boat, but if you choose a private fast boat, you can always stop in the Ilha das Canárias in one of the restaurants.

The tour can last from 4 to 8 hours and leave by demand from the port. The big boats normally leave on the weekends and national holidays at 8 am. The fast boats should be booked in advance, with an agency or directly with us (if you are a guest) and then you can choose the time you want to leave.
