Kite trips - Icaraí de Amontada and Moitas

Beach, dunes and river alltogether

Located in a privileged area, between Paracuru and Jericoacoara, Icaraí de Amontada, or Icaraizinho the name the locals use, is one of the top spots of the long and windy coast of Ceará. As Jeri, it is also a fishing village, but belongs to the city of Amontada. The beach is in a bay, with 6 km extension with great conditions for kitesurfing. First discovered by windsurfers and recently by kitesurfers, today Icaraí offers a lot of options for the tourist. Charming hotels and B&B's, great restaurants are all around the beach and the village.

Only 10 km (in dirt road) away or 13 km a downwind, is the even smaller village and beach of Moitas. A little bay with a river mouth by its end (looking like a small version of our Barra Grande), Moitas has only one pousada in the middle of the huge fisherman community. It is possible to make tours in the river and mangrove with a kaiak and eat fresh oysters caught right in front of you. Detail: the "restaurant" only offers two things in their menu: oysters and caipirinha.

The kite spot

In Icaraizinho, the bay offers three types of conditions: upwind, small waves of 1 to 2 meter high, windsurf area, close to Clube Ventos; small waves for jumping in the middle of he beach and flat conditions on the end of the bay.

In Moitas, all the small bay beach is great for kitesurf, but closer to the river mouth, during low tide, it can be really flat for freestyle. The downwind from Icaraizinho to Moitas is fast and easy to do.

When to go

The wind season Icaraí da Amontada is officially between July to January, being the peak during August and November, and Setember is the most windy month.

We were there during low season (February - unfortunately it is when we have time to travel) so all we got was cloudy weather and no wind! But we definitely need to come back during kite season!

Where to stay

In Icaraí da Amontada there are several options of pousadas and B&B's, from simple to chic. Some options that we had the opportunity to visit or stay: Hula Hula Brazil (few spacious rooms with breathtaking view), Zapata (also petfriendly), Hibisco and Villa Mango (more fancy, in front of the kitespot).

For the ones who prefer even more tranquility, it is possible to stay in Moitas.  The only pousada there is the one from the french Silvain and his brazilian wife Val, Casa Laculá. Definitely an experience!

Where to eat

In Icaraizinho that are some options of pizzas, hamburguers, brazilian barbecue and local sea food. We recommend:

* Restaurant & Pizzeria Hibisco, located inside the pousada.

* Clube Ventos: good option for something light during the day.

* Restaurante Villa Mango - we haven't been there, but the reviews are awsome!.

In Moitas, you will also have to eat at the Pousada Laculá! Homemade delicious food! You can't also miss the fresh oysters from the river, to be appreciated with caipirinha!
